His diverse experience in branding, motion graphics, environmental design and art direction allows him to integrate visual communication, conceptual thinking and technological innovation into his practice. Jonathan’s clients have included Nike, Apple, Google, Herman Miller and more. His work has earned him multiple design awards, including recognitions from the the Type Directors Club, Art Directors Club and GDUSA. Jonathan worked and collaborated with many creative agencies and studios, such as Other Means, Gretel, and 2x4. Previously, Jonathan worked at Pentagram as a Senior Designer under the NY partner Natasha Jen. In 2021 Jonathan joined Something Special Studios as a Design Lead, overseeing the design department and working across a range of client projects that span from lifestyle to music to technology.Jonathan holds a BFA from The Cooper Union. During his final year, he was selected to be a Fellow at The Herb Lubalin Center for Design and Typography. Based on his background in Typography and Motion, Jonathan returned to The Cooper Union as a teacher in 2019. As part of the Type@Cooper program, he offered a class that revolved around the connection between type and animation. But with its sleek titanium body and 200 MP camera, it’s also dazzling new technology, precision-engineered. So when Samsung asked us to help introduce it to the world, we did what any sane person would do: we kept it simple. Two words. “Beyond slim.” That’s it. No hoverboards. No holograms. Just design so precise it could slice prosciutto. From there, we built a new visual world along with a film that says: look what you can do with just a few millimeters when you have imagination and verve. It shows how a few millimeters is more than enough room for Samsung to fit in more first-class design with breathtaking photography, engineering and technology than anyone thought possible. Set beneath the Brooklyn Bridge at Emily Warren Roebling Plaza, the event brought together the city’s best high school hoopers, legendary local leagues, and future stars. The culmination of the weekend was the crowning of the Season 6 NYvsNY champs. Nike tasked us to build a space worthy of the best of the best—a basketball utopia—fit for winners. We responded with the design of Victory Park, a space where the city’s finest talents could battle it out and the community could come together.We led the creative direction, spatial design, graphic applications, and animations for Victory Park. The spatial design married unexpected materiality with elements that felt true to the DNA of the city and streetball. The animations embodied Nike, NYC, and victory, injecting winning energy into the park.From August 10th to 12th, Victory Park hosted matchups between the top teams from NYC’s most competitive basketball leagues. The NYvsNY finals, the crown jewel of Victory Park, acted as a celebratory end-cap to the weekend.Guests could enjoy the park grounds, purchase exclusive Victory Park merch, and soak in the atmosphere between games. This was winning basketball. This was Victory Park. Special StudiosRole: Design Lead2024 A visual identity and tone of voice for the climbing spectacle of the summer.Despite its recent uptick, sport climbing is largely homogeneous—often limited by cost, a sense of belonging, or access to a community. But The North Face is on a mission to change that. In the summer of 2024, The North Face Climb Festival returned with events in London, Shanghai, and New York City. The festival is a free public event that brings climbing enthusiasts and spectators together for a sport-meets-culture moment.We were tasked with creating a new visual identity for The North Face Climb Festival. The identity was designed to reflect the dynamism and diversity of the event and the sport. Anchored by a custom logomark that constantly shifted perspective, the design system brought the festival to life with bright color combinations and contrasting compositions.At the heart of the event is the Deep Water Solo Comp—an adrenaline-inducing climbing competition that challenges experienced climbers to reach the top of the wall with nothing to break their fall but water. Beyond the excitement of the competition, the festival also offers programming like live DJ sets, local partnerships, film screenings, and other services and experiences.We translated the visual identity into various graphic elements for digital and social assets that worked to communicate the cultural side of the festival. SSS also led the copywriting for the festival, creating a tone of voice that would be inclusive and inviting, catering to both seasoned climbers and newcomers alike. coffee—inspired by the springy, energy-giving responsiveness of the Nike Pegasus 41. The Nike Pegasus 41 combines Air Zoom and ReactX to provide runners with over 13 percent more energy return than the Pegasus 40. Nike came to us wanting to illustrate that innovation while also giving back to New Yorkers and runners, two audiences known for being energy givers themselves. The result was Café Volt—a community coffee shop powering NYC with free coffee. Playing off the belief that the more you run in Pegasus, the more it gives you, we devised a way to hand out free coffee with a ‘the more you give, the more you get’ twist. Runners with proof of recent running miles in the Nike Run Club or Strava apps received a ticket for a free specialty coffee, while everyone else received a small coffee or espresso. Café Volt opened to the public on Global Running Day and remained open throughout the weekend. It offered energy in the form of coffee, community runs, exclusive merch, and first access to the Pegasus 41. We led the spatial design of the shop, transforming an existing retail establishment into a volted-out, energetic and elevated café. Inside the café was a product display area highlighting the Pegasus 41 benefits, inviting runners to try on the future of Nike Running. We also designed the graphic identity for Café Volt, which showed up on the exterior and interior of the café, custom coffee beans made in partnership with Honey Moon Coffee, merch like mugs and tees, and outside signage, including an energetic sign spinner. Programming included community runs with local run clubs, such as Orchard Street Runners and Old Man Run Club. Runners would start and end at the shop, receiving a free coffee and a boost of social energy. The café successfully gave energy back to the community throughout the weekend, reminding runners to get moving and inspiring others to start their running journeys. flipped the script to launch the latest Air innovation and celebrate Air Max season. The Air Max Dn is the latest Air innovation from Nike featuring Dynamic Air. For Air Max Season 2024, we worked with SNKRS to build energy around the drop of the Dn. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of Air Max Day, our goal was to reinvigorate the Air Max legacy for the next generation and bring a more playful, irreverent tone to the SNKRS App.Our approach was to host a SNKRS Live special called Max Access. Max Access took inspiration from public access television, cultivating an air of unpredictability throughout the stream. With a variety of segments centering around Air Max, we broke away from the usual format to bring something entirely new and surreal to SNKRS audiences.We created the visual identity for Max Access, taking a maximalist, vibrant approach to the design. The oval shape that appears across the identity and in the custom typeface was taken directly from the official Air Max Dn logo. The story of Luna Luna began in 1987 in Hamburg, Germany. André Heller, an artist and curator, had an extraordinary vision: to create the world's first and only art amusement park. Inspired by a traditional luna park, he called it Luna Luna — a lively fantasyland of once-in-a-lifetime artworks set within a functional fairground. Heller invited over thirty artistic visionaries to participate, including some of the era’s most enchanting artists. When the park opened, visitors could ride a Keith Haring carousel, take in the view atop a Jean-Michel Basquiat Ferris wheel, get lost in a Lichtenstein labyrinth, and much more. But as the summer of ‘87 came to a close, so did Luna Luna. Initially slated for a global tour, the art park instead became entangled in litigation and was locked away for thirty-five years. Until now. In 2019, upon discovering the story of Luna Luna, we embarked on a mission to bring the art park back to life. Joining forces with André Heller himself and like-minded partners, Dreamcrew, Daniel McClean, Justin Wills, and Live Nation, Luna Luna was finally rescued in January of 2022. Now the artworks are being meticulously restored to their former glory, with plans for Luna Luna to tour the world as Heller always dreamed. Alongside these attractions from '87 will be a new collection of interactive fairground attractions designed by some of today's most influential artists. Building off of the legacy of the original park, we developed a new brand strategy and identity that brought Luna Luna into the present and positioned the brand for future growth. This work also included a foundational marketing and commerce strategy to support the brand’s development.Our team also launched Luna Luna's website and socials to align with the project’s New York Times announcement in November 2022. We led content strategy, copywriting, design, and development of the website, creating an immersive space that tells the story of the 1987 park while also giving a glance at the future. Yet, over 50 years after its inception, it remains more relevant than ever. It's outlived prime ministers, presidents, countless technological trends, and fads. Remaining the world's most trusted and reliable source of communication throughout multiple decades, impacting not only our professional correspondences but also our personal lives and cultural norms.From this insight, Email is Dead was born, an exhibition that went far beyond the topic of email marketing, exploring the cultural power of email, its origins, and continued relevance as an essential part of our everyday lives, both personally and professionally.Email is Dead was an interactive exhibition at the Design Museum in London in the fall of 2023, which sought to demonstrate that email isn’t dead, but more alive than ever.
